Turkish students have achieved a major international victory, winning the International Innovation Competition organized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
November 13
The team of students and alumni from Yeditepe University secured the world championship with their pioneering project, the "AI-Supported Air Traffic Controller Guidance and Support System." The competition, which encompasses 193 member states and which had received 24 eligible applications, saw the Turkish team emerge as the global winner at the final event held in Montreal, Canada, on September 21-22.
AI System to Revolutionize Air Traffic
The winning project is an innovative artificial intelligence system designed to enhance safety and efficiency in civil aviation. It works by analyzing key parameters—such as aircraft type, distance, and real-time weather conditions—to automatically select the most suitable landing airport. The system also proposes alternative landing points and is designed to mitigate risks for air traffic controllers.
This groundbreaking AI solution earned Türkiye its first world championship in the ICAO competition. The students were presented with their awards at a ceremony held at the ICAO Headquarters in Montreal. The ceremony was attended by Türkiye's officials, including Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Enver İskurt, and Deputy Director General of DHMI and SOCEA President Dr. Cengiz Paşaoğlu. The officials were present to congratulate the triumphant students on their international success.
